Direct messages vs channels

PostRoll has two kinds of conversation: direct messages and channels in groups. They look the same in the feed but behave differently in a few important ways.

A DM is a one-to-one (or N-way) chat between specific people. No group, no roles, no permissions to configure. Anyone in the DM can post; everyone sees everything. Good for:

  • A quick “are we still on for tomorrow?”
  • GM-to-player side chats outside the table.
  • Small player groups planning a heist out-of-character.

Start a DM from the + button at the top of the DMs section in the left rail.

A channel lives inside a group — usually one group per campaign or community. The group owns the member list; channels share that member list and add per-channel permissions on top.

A typical campaign group might have:

  • #table-chat — IC banter and quick OOC during a session.
  • #planning — long-form scheduling and recap.
  • #out-of-character — pure OOC, off-topic, memes.
  • #gm-private — a GM-only channel for prep notes (visible only to GMs and admins).

Groups also unlock voice channels, custom emoji, invite links, roles, and the audit log. See Creating a group.

  • Just two of you? DM.
  • A campaign with multiple players? Group with channels.
  • A short-lived planning thread? DM, or a channel thread inside the campaign group — see Threads.
