Moving & selecting tokens

Moving pieces is the thing you’ll do most. It’s mostly just dragging, with a few keys that make fine adjustments painless.

Click a token to select it. It grows slightly and picks up a highlight ring. Click empty map to let it go.

You can only select tokens you’re allowed to control — see Who can move which token.

  • Drag the token to where you want it. An arrow trails behind showing the path you’re taking, and the token snaps to the grid when you let go.
  • Arrow keys nudge the selected token one square. Hold two at once for a diagonal.
  • Shift + Arrow keys turn the token to face that direction. Its vision — and its cone, if it has one — swings round with it.

There is no multi-select on the map — dragging a box or shift-clicking on the canvas won’t do it.

Multi-select lives in the Tokens tab of the scene sidebar (GM only). In that list:

  • Shift-click, ⌘-click or Ctrl-click rows to add and remove them from the selection.
  • The header shows a running count, e.g. (4 selected).
  • Row actions like hide/show and grouping then apply to the whole selection at once.

See The token list & groups.

Every token has a Move Mode that decides how it travels — set it from the token’s right-click menu or its settings. It’s cosmetic, but it sells very different things:

Mode How it looks
Bounce The default. The token hops square by square along the path.
Smooth Glides along the route, still checking each square for walls.
Teleport Vanishes and reappears at the destination with a cyan shockwave. Ideal for Misty Step and dimension doors.
Direct Slides in a straight line to the destination, ignoring the grid path. Good for flying and charging.

If a route crosses a wall, the token stops at it rather than walking through. Two switches control this:

  • VTT Settings → Movement → Block Movement by Walls — the table-wide switch.
  • Token Settings → Behaviour → Constrained by Walls — per token, for the ghost that should walk through the crypt wall.
