Videos

Drop a YouTube video onto a wiki page — an actual-play clip, a map-making timelapse, a session recap, ambient music for a location.

Adding one

  1. Type /video (or /youtube) and pick YouTube video.

  2. Paste the link. Anything YouTube gives you works — a watch?v= URL from the address bar, a youtu.be share link, or a /shorts/ link.

  3. Optionally add a caption, and a start time if you want the video to begin partway in — either seconds (90) or YouTube’s own shorthand (1m30s).

The thumbnail preview in the dialog is your confirmation that the link parsed. If it doesn’t appear, the link isn’t one PostRoll recognises as a video — a channel or playlist URL, for example, won’t work.

What readers see

A thumbnail with a play button. The video only starts loading when someone clicks it — until then, nothing is fetched from YouTube at all.

That’s deliberate, and it buys three things:

  • Pages stay fast. A YouTube player is heavy; ten embeds on one page would be ten of them. Ten thumbnails cost almost nothing.
  • Nothing is shared with YouTube until a reader opts in by clicking. When the player does load, it uses YouTube’s no-cookie domain.
  • There’s always a Watch on YouTube link, for readers who’d rather open it there.

Editing or removing one

Hover the video and use the toolbar in its top-right corner — the pencil to change the link, caption or start time, the bin to remove it.

Where videos do and don’t appear

Wiki page (viewing) Full thumbnail-then-play behaviour.
PDF / EPUB export The thumbnail prints as a normal figure, captioned with the video’s link.
Offline pinned pages The video can’t be downloaded, so you’ll see a tile with the caption instead of the thumbnail.
