Live session transcripts

Every room in PostRoll can keep a written transcript of your sessions. Each player’s browser transcribes their own microphone locally; the lines are saved to the room and shown to everyone live, labelled with the player’s name or their character’s name.

Transcripts are opt-in per player and per session — nothing is recorded until you click Transcribe in the room.

How it works

• Each player’s browser uses the same speech recognition that powers wiki dictation. It listens to your local microphone (the same one you use for voice chat).
• When PostRoll has recognised a complete phrase, it saves a line to the room’s transcript.
• Other room members see your line appear immediately. Your line is labelled with the character you’ve picked, or your display name if you haven’t.

Caution

Speech recognition only runs in Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave) and Safari. Firefox players will see the transcript everyone else is producing, but won’t be able to add lines themselves.

Turning on transcription

1. Open the room and click Enter Play to enter the live session view.
2. Open the right-hand sidebar and click the Session tab (radio icon). It only appears once you’re inside a room.
3. Under Live transcription, click Transcribe. The first time you do this, PostRoll asks you to confirm — your voice will be saved as text into the room transcript and visible to other room members. Click OK to acknowledge.
4. Speak normally. Your words appear in the live transcript stream at the bottom of the Session tab as you go: an italic preview while PostRoll is still listening, then committed text once a phrase is recognised.

To stop, click Transcribing again. The play surface keeps a small red pulse next to the toggle while you’re being recorded so you don’t forget you’re on.

Speaking as a character

If you’ve added one of your characters to the room (in the Overview tab on the room landing page), you can label your transcript lines with that character’s name instead of your own.

1. With the Session tab open, click the speaker dropdown next to Transcribe. By default it shows your name.
2. Pick the character you’re playing.
3. Lines you record from now on will be labelled with the character’s name. Past lines keep whatever label you used at the time.

If a character isn’t listed, add them to the room from the Overview tab first. Players only see their own characters in the picker — you can’t impersonate someone else’s NPC.

Tip

The GM and any spectators can keep the speaker as Myself to narrate out-of-character. Mid-scene you can switch to the character to speak in-character, then back again. Each line remembers what you picked when you said it.

Reading the transcript later

Two ways to scroll back through past lines:

• Inside the room: the Session tab’s live stream shows the most recent lines (around 200) with auto-scroll. For older lines, use the History button in the corner of the Live transcription section — it opens the room’s Transcript chat channel with the full archive.
• From the chat sidebar: open the room’s group and pick the Transcript channel. The full history is there, ordered chronologically across all sessions.

The transcript also lives on the room landing page, in the Transcript tab — the last of the room’s seven tabs: Overview, Heroes, Schedule, Chronicle, Table, Chat, Transcript.

Deleting a line

Hover any of your own lines in either view to reveal a small trash icon. Click it to remove that line from the transcript permanently. The room owner can delete any line, not just their own.

Languages

The transcript uses the same language picker as wiki dictation — the small language chip in the Session tab’s Live transcription section. Set it to Automatic to follow your browser’s language, or pick a specific language for this session.

Privacy notes

• Your audio is transcribed by your browser. PostRoll never receives your voice — only the resulting text.
• The browser may forward audio to its own speech service (e.g. Google for Chrome, Apple for Safari) to do the recognition. That’s the same path system dictation uses.
• Only members of the room can read the transcript. People who aren’t members can’t see it even if they have the URL.
• Your speech is only captured while Transcribe is on. Toggling it off stops recording immediately.

Troubleshooting

There’s no Session tab. You’re not in a room (only /app/rooms/<id>/play shows it), or the right-hand sidebar isn’t open. Open the sidebar — the Session tab is the radio icon, only present when you’re inside a room.

The Transcribe button is greyed out. Your browser doesn’t support speech recognition. Try Chrome or Safari.

“Microphone permission denied.” Your browser has blocked microphone access. Open your browser’s site settings for postroll.app and change Microphone to Allow, then reload.

Lines from another player aren’t showing up. They probably haven’t clicked Transcribe on their end. The toggle is per-player and per-session — they have to opt in each time they join.

My character doesn’t appear in the speaker dropdown. Add them to the room from the Overview tab on the room landing page first. Only characters you own show up — you can’t speak as someone else’s PC.

Lines disappeared after I left the room. They shouldn’t — saved lines stay put. If you’re sure lines are missing, someone may have deleted them, or they were captured in a different room.
