Canon, drafts & state over time
Not everything in a world is settled fact — some of it is provisional, disputed, or still unfolding in play. These tools let you separate draft history from canon, track how things change over time, and fold your sessions into the world’s story.
Canon status
Section titled “Canon status”Every event has a canon status, set in the event inspector:
- Canon — settled world history (the default).
- Draft — provisional; not yet part of official lore.
- Disputed — contested or uncertain.
- Non-canon — explicitly outside the canon (a what-if, a retcon you kept).
Non-canon events are badged wherever they appear, so you always know what’s settled and what isn’t.
State over time
Section titled “State over time”Places change rulers, characters gain and lose titles, factions shift allegiance. Instead of overwriting, you record each as a state fact with a time range — so the history is preserved.
On any entity’s Timeline tab, the State over time section lists these facts as subject · attribute → value, each with its window:
- Thornhold · ruler of → House Ashen — 1209 – 1251 AR
- Thornhold · ruler of → House Varn — since 1251 AR
-
Choose an attribute (ruler_of, title, allegiance, name, status…).
-
Pick a value — either another entity (a faction, a person) or free text.
-
Optionally set a from and to — leave them blank for “always” or “still true”.
Turn a session into world history
Section titled “Turn a session into world history”What happens at the table can become world history — as a draft first, so you decide what’s canon.
-
On a session’s recap page, use Log a moment to world history. It creates a draft event on the sessions layer, anchored to the session’s time.
-
Later, open that event in the timeline and hit Commit to canon to promote it from draft to settled history.
This keeps your campaign log and your canonical lore cleanly separated until you choose to merge them.
