Dictation

You can speak into a wiki page instead of typing. Words you say appear at the cursor as you go — interim words show as faded italic text while PostRoll figures out what you said, and they commit to the page once your phrase is recognised.

Dictation runs entirely in your browser using your system microphone. Nothing is uploaded to PostRoll’s servers.

Browser support

Dictation works in:

  • Chrome, Edge, Brave and other Chromium-based browsers
  • Safari on macOS and iOS (14.5 and newer)

It is not available in Firefox. If you are using an unsupported browser the microphone button will not appear and the keyboard shortcut does nothing.

Starting dictation

You can turn dictation on three ways:

  • Click the microphone icon in the top breadcrumb bar above the wiki page
  • On a phone, tap the microphone in the editor toolbar at the bottom of the screen
  • Press Cmd + O (Mac) or Ctrl + O (Windows / Linux)

The first time you start dictation, your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. Click Allow. PostRoll remembers the choice for the site, so you only have to do this once.

While dictation is running:

  • The microphone icon turns red and a small red dot pulses next to it
  • Words you speak appear at the text cursor as faded italic text, then turn into normal text once they are confirmed
  • The cursor moves forward after each phrase, so you can keep talking and PostRoll will keep adding to the page

Stopping dictation

Stop dictation any of these ways:

  • Click the microphone icon again
  • Press Cmd + O / Ctrl + O again
  • Close the wiki page or navigate elsewhere

The faded interim text disappears as soon as you stop. Anything that was already confirmed stays on the page.

Names from your world

Speech recognition has a hard time with fantasy names. PostRoll automatically corrects fuzzy transcripts against the names already in your world — your world title, every wiki page title, and every folder name. So if you say “Vael’thraxis arrived in Gondor” and the browser hears “vail thraxis arrived in gondor”, those names are swapped back to their canonical spelling before they land on the page.

A few things to know:

  • It only kicks in for distinctive names (5+ characters). Common short words like “king” or “town” are left alone.
  • It uses your world’s current page list, so the more pages you have for your important characters and places, the more it can fix.
  • Multi-word names like Sundering Plains work as long as the page exists with that exact title.
  • If a substitution is wrong, just delete it and retype — corrections only happen at the moment a phrase is finalised; existing text is never edited.

Tips for cleaner transcripts

  1. Speak in short, complete phrases — pause briefly between sentences so PostRoll has a chance to commit them.
  2. Say punctuation aloud where you want it: “comma”, “full stop”, “question mark”, “new line”, “new paragraph”.
  3. Use your editing keyboard between phrases — you can click anywhere in the page, fix a typo, then carry on speaking.
  4. If a word came out wrong, just delete and re-speak it. Dictation works alongside typing, so you don’t have to start over.

Choosing a dictation language

Next to the microphone in the breadcrumb bar there’s a small two-letter language label (for example AUTO, EN, or FR). Click it to open the language picker.

  • Automatic — uses your browser’s current language (the default; nothing to set).
  • A specific language — pick one of the listed languages, e.g. French (France) or Japanese. PostRoll remembers your choice on this device.

Switching languages while dictation is running restarts recognition immediately with the new language, so you can mid-session jump from English narration to a French character voice.

Privacy

Audio is processed by your browser’s built-in speech recognition. Most browsers send the audio to their own speech service (e.g. Google for Chrome, Apple for Safari) — PostRoll never sees the raw audio and never stores recordings. Only the transcribed text ends up on your wiki page, the same as if you had typed it.

Troubleshooting

The microphone button isn’t there. You’re either on an unsupported browser (e.g. Firefox), or you’re not on a wiki page. Try opening the page in Chrome or Safari.

“Microphone permission denied.” Your browser has blocked microphone access. Open your browser’s site settings for postroll.app, change Microphone to Allow, then reload.

“No microphone detected.” No input device is available. Plug in or enable a microphone in your operating system’s sound settings, then reload the page.

Dictation stops after a pause. This usually means the browser hit its silence timeout or the active tab changed. Click the microphone again to resume.

Cmd / Ctrl + O is opening a file picker instead. That happens in browsers where dictation isn’t supported (Firefox), or when your focus is in a search box rather than the wiki page. Click into the wiki page first, then press the shortcut.

The faded text doesn’t disappear. Click the microphone icon to stop dictation; that always clears any leftover interim text.
