Visibility & discovery
Every Outpost has one of three visibility settings. You can change it at any time from Outpost → Settings.
Private
Section titled “Private”- Who can find it: only people you invite.
- Who can view it: members of the backing chat group.
- In the directory: no.
Use private for friend-group game tables, in-progress communities you’re not ready to open up, or anywhere you want hard-walled access.
Unlisted
Section titled “Unlisted”- Who can find it: anyone with the URL or an invite link.
- Who can view it: anyone with the URL.
- In the directory: no.
Use unlisted for soft-launched communities, communities where you want a “vouched in” feel via shared link, or content you don’t want indexed but also don’t want to gate.
Public
Section titled “Public”- Who can find it: anyone — via the directory, search, and shareable links.
- Who can view it: anyone (even signed-out visitors for the landing page; full feed access is members-only by default).
- In the directory: yes, listed on /app/outposts.
Use public for fan communities, publisher landing pages, open game-table recruitment, and anywhere you want to be discoverable.
Changing visibility
Section titled “Changing visibility”Visibility is editable any time:
- Open your Outpost.
- Click Settings (owner-only).
- Pick the new visibility under Visibility.
- Click Save changes.
Public → private removes the Outpost from the directory immediately, but existing members continue to have access.
How the directory works
Section titled “How the directory works”The directory at /app/outposts lists every Public Outpost, sorted by recency. Filters let visitors narrow by type and tag. Unlisted and Private Outposts never appear here — they’re only reachable by direct link or invitation.
Adding tags (in settings) makes your Outpost easier to find by interest
— for example dnd, pbta, actual-play, art, homebrew.
