Turn triggers & reactions

Some cards are meant to fire on their own beat — regeneration at the top of a turn, a retaliatory strike when something hits you, an aura that catches whoever walks into it. The tabletop watches for those moments and offers them. It never plays a card for you.

Triggered effects at the start or end of a turn

Section titled “Triggered effects at the start or end of a turn”

When the turn changes, the table checks the creature whose turn is starting for cards that fire at the start of a turn, and the creature whose turn just ended for cards that fire at the end of one. Anything it finds appears in a small Triggered effects panel in the bottom-right corner, one row per effect.

Each row has a Play button (it reads Playing… while it resolves) and an × to skip that one. The × in the panel header dismisses the whole list.

When a token takes damage, whoever controls it can be prompted to spend a reaction — a shield spell, a retaliatory bite. The prompt is a simple Confirm / Decline, and only that token’s controller sees it. Confirming plays the card like any other and posts it to the game log.

The full behaviour, including a defensive reaction’s timing, is covered in Playing cards.

If a caster is holding an effect that needs concentration and then takes damage, the table asks that caster’s controller for a Constitution saving throw. The difficulty is 10, or half the damage taken, whichever is higher.

The result is judged for you: make it and the effect holds, miss it and the effect ends — its conditions come off every creature it was riding on.

Starting a new concentration effect also ends the caster’s previous one, so a caster is only ever holding one.

An aura is a zone that stays parked on a creature — a circle of radiant damage, a protective field. At the start of each turn the table re-checks the zone against whoever is standing in it and plays the aura’s effect against them, with whatever save or damage it carries.

Move out of the zone and you stop being caught by it; walk into it and you get picked up on the next turn.
