A token is a piece on the battle map. One image, sitting on one or more grid squares, that somebody can pick up and move. Everything at the table that has a position — a hero, a goblin, a summoned wolf, a runaway cart — is a token.
This trips people up, so it’s worth stating plainly:
| What it is | Where it lives | |
|---|---|---|
| Token | The piece on the map. It has a position, a size, a facing, vision, and a picture. | In a scene. |
| Actor | The character behind the piece — the sheet, with stats, cards, and resources. | In your actors library, independent of any map. |
A token can be linked to an actor. When it is, the piece on the map and the sheet are joined up: the token’s owner can move it, its conditions and hit points read from the sheet, and right-clicking the token offers Open Sheet.
A token doesn’t have to be linked. Plenty of tokens — a barrel, a bloodstain, a fleeing NPC — are just pictures on the map with no sheet behind them.
