Connection and real-time issues
PostRoll’s live features — board collaboration, chat, presence dots, live game rooms — all run over one real-time connection. If pages load fine but nothing updates live, that connection is usually the problem.
What happens automatically
Section titled “What happens automatically”You rarely need to do anything after a network blip:
- The connection retries on its own. When it comes back, chat rejoins your conversations and live boards re-sync, pulling in any edits you missed while you were away.
- Expired sessions refresh themselves. If your login token lapses, the app refreshes it and reconnects without signing you out.
So the first fix is often just: wait a few seconds.
Symptoms by surface
Section titled “Symptoms by surface”Board edits don’t appear for others. Check that Live collaboration is switched on in that board’s settings — it’s off by default and per-board (turning it on requires Collector, though everyone can then join). Comments update live on every board regardless. If it was working and stopped, refresh — you’ll get the latest saved board.
Chat messages aren’t sending or arriving. A message that fails to send is marked as failed rather than silently lost. Check your connection, refresh the page, and send again. Typing indicators and unread badges also depend on the live connection.
Online dots look wrong. Presence has three states — online, idle, offline — and idle users still count as online. See Presence and idle before assuming it’s a bug.
Your game room session freezes. Refresh the page to rejoin the session — you’ll come back in at the current state.
Checks on your side
Section titled “Checks on your side”- Confirm you’re online — try loading another site.
- Refresh the page (hard refresh:
Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + R). - Try another network. Live features need a persistent live connection; some corporate firewalls, VPNs, and proxies block it, which makes pages load normally while live updates silently fail. A phone hotspot is a quick test.
- Sign out and back in if refreshing doesn’t help.
When to report it
Section titled “When to report it”If live updates fail on a normal home network after a refresh, tell us on Discord or at hello@postroll.app. Include which surface broke (board, chat, room), what you were doing, and whether a refresh fixed it — that’s usually enough for us to reproduce it.
