Creating an Outpost
Outpost ownership is a Booster (or Collector) feature. Starter accounts can join existing Outposts but can’t create one — see Choosing a plan.
Prerequisites
Section titled “Prerequisites”- A Booster or Collector subscription.
- An idea of what kind of Outpost you want — see the type overview.
Walkthrough
Section titled “Walkthrough”- Open Outposts from the main app menu.
- Click Create in the page header (top right). On smaller screens you’ll also find a Create Outpost button on /app/outposts/manage.
- The creation modal asks for four things:
- Name — what your Outpost is called. 2-80 characters.
- Slug — the URL segment for your Outpost. We suggest one based on the name as you type; you can edit it. Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only.
- Type — pick one of the five Outpost types.
- Tagline (optional) — a short pitch shown on the directory and your Outpost header.
- Pick a Visibility — who can see the Outpost:
- Private (the default) — only the owner and members.
- Unlisted — anyone with the link, but not in the directory.
- Public — listed in the directory, readable by anyone.
- Click Create Outpost. You’ll land on your new Outpost’s home page.
What happens behind the scenes
Section titled “What happens behind the scenes”When you create an Outpost we:
- Create a backing chat group with you as the Owner role.
- Add you as the first member.
- Link the Outpost identity (name, slug, type, banner) to that group.
You can start inviting members and adding channels immediately — the chat infrastructure is wired up from the moment the Outpost exists.
Promoting an existing group
Section titled “Promoting an existing group”If you already have a chat group you want to convert into an Outpost — for example, a private game’s chat that’s grown into a wider community — it can be converted rather than starting from scratch. There’s no in-app button for this yet: contact support (hello@postroll.app) and we’ll convert it for you.
Changing your mind
Section titled “Changing your mind”Slug and Outpost type can’t be changed after creation — they’re how people find and identify your Outpost. Everything else (tagline, banner, tags, visibility) is editable from settings.
If you really need to change the slug or type, contact support (hello@postroll.app) and we’ll help.
