Creating an Outpost

Outpost ownership is a Booster (or Collector) feature. Starter accounts can join existing Outposts but can’t create one — see Choosing a plan.

  • A Booster or Collector subscription.
  • An idea of what kind of Outpost you want — see the type overview.
  1. Open Outposts from the main app menu.
  2. Click Create in the page header (top right). On smaller screens you’ll also find a Create Outpost button on /app/outposts/manage.
  3. The creation modal asks for four things:
    • Name — what your Outpost is called. 2-80 characters.
    • Slug — the URL segment for your Outpost. We suggest one based on the name as you type; you can edit it. Lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens only.
    • Type — pick one of the five Outpost types.
    • Tagline (optional) — a short pitch shown on the directory and your Outpost header.
  4. Pick a Visibility — who can see the Outpost:
    • Private (the default) — only the owner and members.
    • Unlisted — anyone with the link, but not in the directory.
    • Public — listed in the directory, readable by anyone.
  5. Click Create Outpost. You’ll land on your new Outpost’s home page.

When you create an Outpost we:

  1. Create a backing chat group with you as the Owner role.
  2. Add you as the first member.
  3. Link the Outpost identity (name, slug, type, banner) to that group.

You can start inviting members and adding channels immediately — the chat infrastructure is wired up from the moment the Outpost exists.

If you already have a chat group you want to convert into an Outpost — for example, a private game’s chat that’s grown into a wider community — it can be converted rather than starting from scratch. There’s no in-app button for this yet: contact support (hello@postroll.app) and we’ll convert it for you.

Slug and Outpost type can’t be changed after creation — they’re how people find and identify your Outpost. Everything else (tagline, banner, tags, visibility) is editable from settings.

If you really need to change the slug or type, contact support (hello@postroll.app) and we’ll help.
