Membership tiers

Membership tiers let you sell recurring monthly or yearly memberships to supporters. Each tier mints a managed group role — grant that role access to specific channels, posts, or products and they unlock automatically when someone subscribes (and lock again when their subscription ends).

  • A Collector subscription (required for monetisation surfaces in general).
  • Stripe Connect set up and ready — see Connecting Stripe.
  • Monetisation enabled on your Outpost.
  1. Open Outpost admin → Monetisation → Tiers.
  2. Click New tier.
  3. Set the basics:
    • Name — what supporters see (e.g. “Patron”, “Inner Circle”).
    • Description — what they get at this level.
    • Price and billing interval — monthly or yearly.
    • Perks — bullet points that appear on the tier card.
  4. Click Create tier. It starts as a draft.

A draft tier is invisible to supporters. The matching managed role is created at the same time and shows up in your Outpost’s Roles & permissions tab as Tier · <name>.

The tier itself doesn’t unlock anything yet — you grant access by giving the tier’s managed role permission to whatever you want gated:

  1. Open Outpost admin → Roles & permissions.
  2. Pick the tier’s role (named Tier · <Your tier name>).
  3. Grant channel access, post / event / product gating, custom emoji slots — whatever you want supporters at this level to see.

When someone subscribes they’re automatically added to the role; when they cancel, the role grant is removed at the end of their billing period.

Beyond role-based access, you can attach downloadable files to a tier — behind-the-scenes PDFs, art packs, audio downloads, monthly bonus content. Files are uploaded once and any active subscriber can grab them.

  1. Open the tier in Outpost admin → Monetisation → Tiers.
  2. Click Edit on the tier.
  3. Scroll to Perk files and click + Add perk file.
  4. Pick a file from your computer. Upload happens in the background; subscribers see the new file as soon as it’s registered.

Subscribers see a per-tier list of available downloads on the tier’s Support page; each download is served via a short-lived signed link (five-minute expiry) so leaked URLs can’t be re-used.

When the tier is set up, click Publish on its row. PostRoll provisions the Stripe Product + recurring Price on your connected account immediately, and the tier becomes visible on your Outpost’s Support tab.

Archiving a tier does two things:

  1. Stops new subscribers from joining the tier.
  2. Cancels every current subscriber’s renewal at the end of their billing period. They keep their role and access until that period ends (Stripe cancel_at_period_end), and then the role is revoked automatically.

To archive: tiers list → row’s Archive button. A confirmation prompt tells you how many active subscribers will be wound down.

Outpost admin → Monetisation → Subscribers shows:

  • Total active supporters
  • MRR per currency (annual subs are converted to monthly equivalent)
  • Each supporter, their tier, status, renewal date, and whether they’ve set cancel-at-period-end

Filter chips at the top: Active, Past-due, Canceled, and All. The Past-due tab is your dunning panel — anyone whose last payment failed appears here with the number of retry attempts Stripe has made and the date of the most recent failure. Stripe’s smart-retry continues for several days; subscribers can update their card from the billing portal banner in the meantime.

PostRoll takes a 10% application fee on every supporter charge — both initial and recurring. The remainder accrues to your Stripe balance and pays out on Stripe’s standard schedule.

  • When someone subscribes you get “New supporter on Tier · <name>”.
  • When someone cancels (still in their paid period) you get a heads-up so you can reach out before they fully lapse.
  • Supporters get their own activation and payment-failed notifications.
  • Annual supporters get a renewing-soon reminder a week before their card is charged again, so they aren’t surprised by the renewal. Monthly supporters don’t get this reminder — the smaller charge isn’t worth a notification.

Issue refunds through the Stripe dashboard linked from your monetisation panel. Refunds on a subscription don’t retroactively revoke past-period access — supporters keep what they’ve already paid for.
