Sound effects

PostRoll can play short tone chimes when you send a message, receive one, or get mentioned. Off by default, opt-in per user.

  1. Find the user panel at the bottom of the conversation list — your avatar, name and status.
  2. Click the sliders button (Preferences).
  3. Under Behaviour, toggle Sound effects.

The other preferences in that sheet — density, text size, clock format, the members column and avatars — are covered in Appearance and layout.

The setting is per-user, not per-conversation — flipping it once turns chimes on or off everywhere in chat.

  • Send — a brief downward blip when your own message is sent.
  • Receive — a slightly higher blip when a non-self message arrives in the active conversation.
  • Mention — a two-note chime when someone @-mentions you.

Tones are synthesized in your browser — nothing to download. Volume is fixed and intentionally low so they won’t startle you.

If your tab is muted at the OS or browser level, the chimes are silenced too — there’s no override.

Chimes are independent of motion preferences. The reaction-pop animation honours your system’s reduced-motion setting; sound effects don’t (they’re sound, not motion).
