Decorate tool
The Decorate tool is where you dress the map. Compass roses, titles, ornate borders, custom illustrations — anything you want to live above the basemap layer.
Three stacked sections plus a sticky banner at the top.
Edit on canvas
Section titled “Edit on canvas”The top of the panel has an Edit on canvas toggle. When on, every placed decoration shows its selection handles — you can drag, scale, rotate, and align directly on the canvas. When off, the canvas reads as a finished map (handles hidden) but everything you placed stays visible.
Two buttons next to it:
- Undo / Redo — keyboard
Cmd/Ctrl + ZandCmd/Ctrl + Shift + Zalso work. - Add text — drops a fresh text decoration onto the canvas. Use it for titles, subtitles, region callouts.
Library
Section titled “Library”The first big section. Four built-in asset categories:
- Compass roses — ornate north arrows in various styles.
- Title backdrops — paper / scroll / cartouche shapes meant to sit behind a title.
- Illustrations — decorative artwork (sea monsters, ships, trees).
- Settlements & landmarks — icons for cities, towers, ruins, etc.
Each category opens an accordion with a 3-column grid of thumbnails.
Search
Section titled “Search”The search box at the top of the Library filters across every category. Type “compass” to see only compass roses; type “tower” to surface landmark icons. The accordion auto-opens around matches.
Place an asset
Section titled “Place an asset”Two ways:
-
Drag an asset thumbnail onto the canvas — it lands where you drop it.
-
Click an asset thumbnail to place it at the centre of the map. Drag from there if you need to move it.
A newly-placed decoration becomes the current selection, so the Inspector below opens for it immediately.
Upload your own
Section titled “Upload your own”Every category has an Upload custom button. Two paths:
- SVG files are inlined into the chrome settings. Tint and shadow controls work normally.
- Raster files (PNG, JPG, WebP) are uploaded to Cloudflare R2 under your user namespace. Tint is disabled (you can’t recolour a raster losslessly); shadow still works.
Uploaded assets are scoped to your account.
Layers panel
Section titled “Layers panel”A sortable list of every placed decoration, top of stack first. Each row shows:
- A thumbnail.
- The asset’s name (you can rename in the Inspector).
- An opacity slider.
- Lock and eye toggles.
- A delete button.
Drag the rows to reorder front-to-back. Click a row to select that
decoration. Multi-select with Cmd / Ctrl + Click.
Search
Section titled “Search”Same idea as the Library — filter by asset name, text content, or kind.
Inspector
Section titled “Inspector”Visible only when at least one decoration is selected. Per-decoration controls:
- Position X / Y — pixel coordinates on the basemap.
- Scale / Rotation / Opacity — sliders.
- Tint — colour picker. Applied as
currentColoron SVG sources; disabled for raster sources. - Shadow — toggle plus colour / blur / offset X / offset Y / opacity controls.
- Flip H / Flip V — horizontal and vertical mirror.
Title decorations gain a few extras:
- Text — the title string.
- Font — the full font picker (the same faces the scene label editor uses), not a fixed handful. Older maps keep their original face until you choose a new one.
- Weight and Tracking — how heavy the letters are and how far apart they sit.
- Uppercase and Outline — force capitals, and add a halo behind the letters so a title stays legible over busy terrain.
- Curve — bend the baseline upward or downward.
A section below the Inspector for the page border.
- Style — Single line, Double line, or Hidden.
- Colour — hex picker. Empty input restores the palette default.
- Width — 1–40 px. Empty input restores the palette default.
Scale bar
Section titled “Scale bar”- Style — Segmented bar, Minimal line, or Hidden.
- Position — pick a corner.
- Total units — the number the full bar represents (e.g. 1024 for cells, 200 for kilometres).
- Unit — a select with common presets (cells, hexes, km, mi, leagues, m, ft, yd) plus a custom option that opens a free-form field for anything else.
