Presence and idle
Three presence states, shown as a small dot next to each member’s name in the rail and the Members tab:
- Green — online and active.
- Amber — online but idle (no input for a while).
- Grey — offline.
The same dot sits on the avatar in the profile card — click any message’s avatar or name to open it. Alongside presence it carries pronouns, a bio, how long that person has been on PostRoll and in this Outpost, the Outposts you share, and buttons to follow, message or open their full profile. How “active” and “idle” work
Section titled “How “active” and “idle” work”PostRoll watches your local activity — mouse, keyboard, scroll, touch, tab focus. After 5 minutes of no activity, your presence flips to idle. Hide the tab, click on something — same flip.
The next mouse move, keystroke, or tab focus flips you back to active.
This runs entirely in your browser. Closing the tab or signing out moves you to offline.
Why it matters
Section titled “Why it matters”- A GM can see at a glance who’s around to answer a quick question.
- Players can decide whether to send a message or wait for someone to come back.
- During play, an amber dot might mean a player stepped away — worth pinging before assuming they’re following the action.
What presence doesn’t do
Section titled “What presence doesn’t do”- It doesn’t gate access to anything. Idle members can still post, read, and react — the indicator is just an advisory.
- It doesn’t change permissions. What you can see and do never depends on your presence state.
- It’s not 100% accurate. If your computer suspends without closing PostRoll, your dot might briefly show as online before the connection drops.
