Sending your first message

The chat surface lives at the chat icon in the left navigation or as a tab inside the contextual sidebar that follows you around the app. This guide gets you from “PostRoll is open” to “I posted something.”

  1. Click the chat icon in the left navigation. The full-screen chat opens at /app/chat.
  2. If you’ve used chat before, the last conversation you had open is selected. If not, you’ll see a placeholder asking you to pick a conversation.

The left rail lists your direct messages at the top and your groups below. Click a DM or expand a group to pick one of its channels.

If your list is empty, see Joining a group or Direct messages vs channels to start your first one.

  1. Click the composer at the bottom and type. Hit Enter to send. Shift+Enter inserts a new line.
  2. Your message appears immediately with a “sending…” status that clears as soon as the server confirms.

That’s it — your message is on the wire. Recipients see it in real time if they’re online, or with a notification if they’re not and the channel isn’t muted.
