In-character vs out-of-character

Two posting modes: out-of-character (OOC), where you post as yourself, and in-character (IC), where you post as one of your characters in the world.

How they look

OOC — your username, your avatar, neutral bubble.
IC — your character’s name, your character’s portrait, a subtle parchment-tinted bubble that distinguishes the message at a glance.

Both can coexist in the same channel. A typical session might alternate every few messages — IC for narration and dialogue, OOC for “wait, did I roll for that?” interjections.

Switch modes

The persona pill sits to the left of the composer. Click it to flip between OOC and IC. The choice is per-conversation — flipping in one channel doesn’t affect another, and your last choice in each channel is remembered.

When you don’t have a character

If you haven’t claimed a character in this world, the IC option is disabled. See Choosing a character.

Per-channel defaults

Some channels are configured as IC-only (e.g. #table-chat) or OOC-only (e.g. #out-of-character). In those channels the persona pill is fixed; you can’t flip. The GM sets this up via channel permissions.
