Generators — names, an oracle and roll tables

The Generators shelf on the Widgets page holds three tools that work for any game: the Name Generator, the Oracle and Roll Tables. Like every tool there, you can open them on their own page or in the Widgets panel beside a map, a board or a wiki page.

Two tabs across the top: People and Places.

People names characters. Pick an Origin — ten real-world cultures and ten fantasy peoples — a Gender, and whether to add a Surname or an Epithet (“the Bold”, “of Oldspire”). These are the same choices as the name button when you create a character, and the tool remembers them.

Places names the world. Pick a Style, then a Place: a settlement, region, river, mountain, landmark, road, quarter, street, building, or an inn or tavern. Some places take one more choice, such as a settlement’s Size. The names come from the same engine Map Foundry uses to label its maps, so a Dark fantasy inn here sounds like one on a Dark fantasy map.

Press Shuffle for a fresh list. Beside each name:

  • the bookmark keeps it in your Kept list
  • the copy button copies it, ready to paste

Kept names are saved to your account, so they’re waiting on your other devices. Press × on a kept name to remove it.

For the questions nobody has decided the answer to — whether the ferryman is still on the river, whether the guard believes the lie.

  1. On the Yes or no tab, type your question if you want it written down.

  2. Under How likely is yes?, pick Certain, Likely, Even, Unlikely or Impossible. The line underneath says which rolls count as yes.

  3. Press Ask.

The answer is Yes or No, with the roll that decided it. A roll far from the line makes it emphatic — Yes, and… or No, and…, where things go better or worse than asked. A roll close to the line makes it a near thing — Yes, but… or No, but…, where there’s a catch or a way in. Nothing is ever quite certain: Certain can still say no, and Impossible can still say yes.

Your last few answers stay under Earlier until you press Clear or close the tool.

Pick one chooses from a list. Type the options, press + or to make one more or less likely, and press Pick one. You’ll see what came up and each option’s chance.

Ready to roll holds tables that come with PostRoll — today, a hundred trinkets from the 2024 rules. Press Roll and the result appears above the table. Copy to yours makes your own copy you can change.

Yours is where you build a table:

  1. Give it a Name and the Dice to roll, such as 1d20 or 2d6.

  2. Press Add row for each result. Set its Low and High numbers and what happens. Rows can cover a range, and the first row that matches a roll wins.

  3. Press Roll to try it.

Press Save as… to keep the table and start another. The menu beside it lists every table you’ve saved.

Press Save to a world, choose the World, and press Add to world. The table becomes a roll table in that world, so you can roll it in chat with /roll-table. It’s a copy: changes you make here afterwards don’t change the world’s table.
